If you want to experience some of America’s Most Delicious Colored Rocks…then treat yourself to a visit to The Valley of Fire State Park in Overton, Nevada!
This State Park is located about an hour’s drive from Las Vegas just north of the Lake Mead Recreational Area. Its intriguing name along with ample dispersed camping nearby prompted my curiosity enough to warrant a visit this November 2021.
Little did I know that it wasn’t just the stunning, fiery, red rocks that would win me over, but also the amazing multi-colored sandstone and limestone formations in shades of gold, white, purple, tan, green, coral, and pink. Wowsa!
The scenic drives showcasing the bright red Aztec Sandstone formations will surely not disappoint!
You can take a short walk to some of the vistas via the parking areas. But, if you’re feeling up for something more challenging, there are several hiking trails throughout the park.
We did most of the hikes, which were not long, but did get a bit challenging in the heat navigating over rock formations and stepping through the soft sand. At times, I felt like I was back in Florida walking the beaches! The temps were only around 80 degrees; however, it felt much hotter on the trails. Be sure to bring plenty of water! You can stop at the Visitor Center for free fill-ups (water spicket on the side of the building by the restrooms.)
This 150 million-year-old area is mind-boggling…It’s no wonder why many Hollywood Movies were filmed in The Valley of Fire! The land’s rich history, including prehistoric petroglyphs and ancient petrified logs, combined with mesmerizing landscapes and colorful kaleidoscopes truly makes this park a treasure…. and well worthwhile visit!
